Home Worship Groups
These are unusual times. We’ve been experiencing an interruption to our “normal” lives; to our “normal” activities, overbooked schedules, and some of our responsibilities. We have witnessed disruption in our economy and supply chains. We’ve even been prevented from meeting together as a church in our usual way. This has all been a not-so-gentle reminder that this life is unpredictable and we’re not in control.
For those of us who know the One who IS in control, we must ask the important questions. What does God have for us in this time? What does He want His church to be doing right now? What should His church be doing when this is over? What is God saying to His people through this?
Many have labeled this time a “wake-up call” for His church. God tells us in His Word exactly what he expects of His church. The bible specifies order, behavior, and purpose for the church, yet the expression of the church varies. In all of those expressions, God has specific instructions for His people that inform us of our calling as the Body of Christ. There are more than 50 times in the Bible when God provides instruction for “one another”.
What does it look like to be a people that is “devoted to one another” (Romans 12:10)? Or that “bears one another’s burdens” (Galations 6:2)? Or that “stirs one another to love and good works” (Hebrews 10:24) or “builds up one another” (Romans 14:19) or “serves one another” (Galatians 5:13)? What if we were to “employ the gifts that God has given us for the benefit of one another” (1 Peter 4:10)?
What if God allows us to use this time to meet together at homes in groups of 10 or 12 to worship Him, to seek Him, to share with each other, pray with each other, to be the church as he intends us to be? Perhaps He is calling His church to repentance and renewal. What if, through this time, we asked God to manifest His Spirit within us to give us a supernatural love for one another? How amazing would it be to witness this let alone be part of it!
God can do it! Not only can He do it, He wants to do it! Jesus told us that we are to love one another as He loved us, and that love will be a witness to the world (John 13:35). God wants us to seek Him first not just as individual believers, but as the Body of Christ! He’s given us this wonderful support system to live out this life together!
