Message: “Externals” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Not Part of a Series.” Externals
Matthew 15:3-20

Main Point:
Jesus is not interested in external rituals or meaningless traditions – He wants your heart to honor Him!

What rituals/traditions are you clinging to?

Background – Tradition of the Elders – washing of the hands

Isaiah 29:13

The Example (verses 4-6)

1. Adherence to Externals does not make us clean or unclean – but rather what comes forth in our lives from our heart!
(verse 11)

2. Uncleanness comes forth from our lives out of our fallen hearts – We must deal with our hearts!

James 3:9-12

Message: “Gotta Love ’em” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Luke.” Gotta Love ’em

Luke 6:27-36

Main Point:
If we’re going to follow Jesus then we have to love everyone, even our enemies!

Matthew 5:43

Love = _to be committed to the other person’s good

*This can only be done through the supernatural strength of the Holy Spirit!

Why must we Love? Because God has been kind & merciful to us! verses 35-36

Ephesians 2:1-5

Why must we Love? Verse 31 ‘Do to others as you would have them do to you.’ (the Golden Rule)

How are we to apply this? Don’t return evil for evil; do good to those who mistreat you; Give to those who ask you; If someone takes from you, do not demand it back! – then we will be acting as sons & daughters of the Most High God.

Matthew 5:44-45

Message: “Does God Punish Us?” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Not Part of a Series.” Does God Punish Us?
Hebrews 12:4-13

Main Point:
We must embrace the Father’s discipline so that we may run this race with perseverance and be made more like Jesus!

Father’s discipline = God’s loving correction/punishment
to help us turn away from sin, and persevere through hardships.(v.6)

1. Though it is not pleasant, we are not to despise or reject His discipline because He is treating us as His children.
v. 5-6

V.5 – ‘Make light’ = Despise or regard lightly; care little for.

*Human parents discipline their children for their good – why would we expect any less of our Heavenly Father?

2. We are to endure hardship in our lives as discipline – receiving it as training for righteousness and holiness. v. 7-11

James 1:2-4

3. The result is to make us strong, able to persevere, and able to share in His holiness.
v. 12-13
