In order to be a disciple of Jesus, He requires radical commitment and devotion – to the point where even loved ones might interpret our devotion as being hate towards them.

1. The example of Abraham “hating” his only son Isaac.

The Lord loves us and has given us His terms for us to follow to show that we love Him and to enjoy His blessings!

1. YAHWEH has given us the Sabbath so that we may rest from work, be refreshed spiritually, and not burnout!

Sabbath = Cease, Rest – Day of rest

2. How do I “keep it holy”?

A. Use the day to rest physically

B. Use the day to recharge my emotions

– Include time for quietness
– Include time for family
– Include time for fellowship

C. Use the day to refocus my spirit

Christ has won victory for us, so that we can live a new life in Him, being forgiven, and overcome our sinful nature and the evil one!

1. We were dead in our sins and uncircumcised hearts, but through the cross Christ canceled our debt and made us alive in Him.

2. Christ has disarmed the powers and authorities, so we can live an overcoming life through His power.

The Lord loves us and has given us His terms for us to follow to show that we love Him and to enjoy His blessings!

1. The third term of covenant God says, “You shall not misuse the Name of the LORD your God.”

Rather than misuse His Name, I am proclaim His Name!

A. Glorify God’s Name continually.

B. Represent God’s Name properly.

C. Rely on God’s Name completely.

1. The third term of the covenant God says, “You shall not misuse the Name of the LORD your God’.

LORD = YAHWEH – ‘I am who I am’ = the Eternal, Self-Existent One

2. Your name represents three things:
a. Reputation
b. Character
c. Authority

3. There are many ways we should avoid using God’s Name:

a. We should avoid using God’s Name to swear.
b. We should avoid using God’s Name to manipulate.
c. We should avoid using God’s Name impulsively.

I. The second term of the covenant is ‘You shall not make for yourself an idol’ = ‘Don’t Idolize anything, but worship God only’, for our God is a jealous God.

II. Worship God only – give Him our highest love and devotion for only He is worthy.

Three motives behind idols:
– It is an attempt to limit God’s location
– It is an attempt to reduce His power and size
– It is an attempt to control God

There are three benefits of worshiping God only, putting Him first in our lives:

1. It will delight me – fulfillment
2. It will deliver me – freedom
3. It will develop me – potential

1. The second term of the covenant is “You shall not make for yourself an idol” = Don’t idolize anything, but worship God only, for our God is a jealous God.

Idolize = To value something more than God

Watch out or idols will corrupt you. (Deut 4:15-20)

A. Idols will disappoint me (Jeremiah 10:14)

B. Idols will dominate me (I Corinthians 12:2)

C. Idols will deform me (Psalm 115:2-8)

2. Worship God only – give Him our highest love and devotion for only He is worthy.

1. God made a covenant with Israel, and a new covenant with us His disciples to walk in relationship.

We come to the Father through His Son Jesus Christ, who gives us His Spirit who writes these laws in our minds, and on our hearts.

2. The first term of the covenant is ‘You shall have no other gods before me’ = ‘put God first in everything.’

The Lord loves us and has given us his commands for us to follow that it may go well with us and enjoy long life!

1. We must love and fear the Lord with all our heart, sould, and strength, and keep His commands upon our hearts.

We come to the Father through His Son Jesus Christ, who gives us His Spirit who writes these laws in our minds and on our hearts.

2. We mus impress these upon children by our life example as well as teaching them formally and informally.

As Jesus gave away His life so that He could produce disciples, so must we die to ourselves and give away our lives to others to enable them to grow as disciples.

1. The process of discipleship in our lives is ongoing and cyclical.

Unbeliever – believer – disciple – disciplemaker!

2. Who is one person you could invest your life in (by yourself or with others) so that they could grow as a disciple?
