Romans 8:18 – 27

Main Point:
We share in the sufferings of Jesus at present but the Spirit helps us in our weakness until we are fully redeemed.

John 16:33 Trouble/Tribulation = (Lit. pressure) affliction, anguish, burden, persecution, anguish, burden, persecution.

Sufferings = emotional/physical hardship, pain, affliction, misfortune, calamity, evil, persecution.

John 15:18-21

1. We are called to share in the sufferings of Jesus. (verse 17)

II Timothy 2:3
II Corinthians 1:3-6

I Peter 1:6-7

2. Part of our sufferings come from the fallen creation. (verses 19-22)

Bondage to Decay = ruin, corruption, destruction, perishing.
Genesis 3:17 ‘Cursed is the ground (the earth in the sense of where we dwell) because of you…’

3. We also groan inwardly to be fully redeemed (from the presence of sin). (verses 23-25)

*Full redemption is realized with a redeemed body. v. 23 > I Corinthians 15:50-52

4. Jesus’ Spirit in us helps us in our weakness, and intercedes for us in the will of God. (verses 26-28)

Message: “The Spirit we’ve received” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Romans.” The Spirit we’ve received
Romans 8:12-17
Main Point:
We are to live by the leading of God’s Spirit in us so that we can die to the old life and live the new life as His daughters and sons!
1. We have received God’s Spirit by which we are adopted
as sons and daughters of God.
(verses 15-16)
By the Spirit we cry out ‘Abba, Father.’
verse 15
We have the inner witness of the Spirit.
verse 16

John 14:16-18

2. By the Spirit’s power we die to the old life and live the new
transformed life as His children.
(verses 13-14)

Message: “No Condemnation for Us” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Romans.” No Condemnation for Us!
Romans 8:1-11

Main Point:
There is now no condemnation for you because God fulfilled the requirements of the Law through His Son Jesus, so that we can live by the indwelling Spirit to be His witnesses!

Condemnation = a damning sentencing

Matthew 5:17-18 > v.48 ‘be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect.’

Acts 1:8

1. God fulfilled the requirements of the Law by His Son Jesus Christ being a sin offering. (verses 1-4)

Leviticus chp 4,9 (started in the garden – animals were slain to provide a covering for their shame Gen 3:21)

2. We can now live in the control of the indwelling Spirit, rather than the ‘flesh’ and have life & peace. (verses 5-10)

3. The Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is living in us and gives life to us, even our mortal bodies! (verses 10-11)

Message: “The Real You and Me” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Romans.” The Real You & me!
Romans 7:1-18

Main Point:
We have died to sin and the Law, and have been raised with Christ to serve in the new way of the Spirit. So, why then do we still sin, doing the things we do not want to do?

II Corinthians 5:17

1. We have been raised with Christ and serve in the new way of the indwelling Spirit. (verses 1-6)

Romans 5:5

2. When we sin now, it is ‘sin living in me,’ that is my ‘flesh/sinful nature’ (verses 14-18)

‘Flesh/sinful nature’ (sarx) = the lower sensual nature of man apart from the Spirit of God.

‘Sin living in me’ = a compulsion toward sin that remains in my flesh (sinful nature).

Galatians 5:16-18

3. The old sinful me is not the real me – the real me is the new, ‘raised in Christ me,’ who lives by the power of the indwelling Spirit! (verses 24-25)

Message: “To Live Is To Die” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Romans.” To Live is to Die
Romans 6:1-14

Main Point:
We have been united with Messiah Jesus in His death – we have died to our old sinful life and have risen into new life in Him!

1. We died with Jesus in His death which is symbolized through baptism – therefore we died to the old self and the old sinful life. (verses 1-3)

*The old self was crucified with Him so that the ‘body of sin’ might be ‘done away with’ or ‘rendered powerless.’ (verse 6)

Katargeo = to inactivate, to render inoperative

John 12:24-25

2. We have been raised with Christ into new life so that we too may live a new life serving God through the indwelling Spirit! (verses 4-6)

Romans 8:9-10

3. We are to count ourselves dead to sin but alive to God through Christ, and not give ourselves as instruments of wickedness but rather

instruments of righteousness!(verses 11-14)

*We are to die to ourselves and sin daily, and commit ourselves to Christ through the empowering work of the Spirit

Message: “Reign In Life” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Romans.” Reign in LIfe!
Romans 5:12 – 17

Main Point:
Receive the grace of the Risen Messiah Jesus and He will enable us to reign in this life!

Reign (basiluo) = to reign as with a King (in contrast to death reigning over us).

1. Sin and death entered the world through the one man Adam, and came to all people because all sinned. (verses 12-14)

Adam first sinned, but we all _confirm it by sinning! (Romans 3:23)

2. Through this came judgment and condemnation (death reigning), but grace and righteousness overflows thru Messiah Jesus! (verses 15-16)

Overflow (perissuo) = to superabound, overflow exceedingly! !

John 1:17-18

3. Those who receive this abundant provision of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life thru Messiah Jesus! (verse 17)

John 6:37 “All those the Father gives to me shall come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never turn them away”

Message: “Are You Good Dirt?” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Not Part of a Series.” Are You Good Dirt?
Luke 8:4-15

Main Point:
Jesus expects us to be good dirt! We are to persevere in applying and obeying His Word, by doing so, produce good fruit in our lives.

Seed = the whole message of God

1. The Word sown in Hard, disinterested hearts is stolen away by the evil one (Satan). (verse 12)

*Satan steals it away with the things of this world.

2. The Word sown in shallow, superficial hearts does not take root and when testing comes, they fall away. (verse 13)

*Trials/tribulation will surely come – it is designed by God to test us!

3. The Word sown in divided hearts is choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures; they do not mature and are unfruitful. (verse 14)

4. The Word sown in good hearts produces good fruit in us – by persevering in obeying it! (verse 15)

Let us persevere in life-long pursuit of Jesus and His Word!
