Message: “Righteousness Is Ours Through Faith” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Romans.” Righteousness Is Ours Through Faith Hebrews 8:7-13

Main Point: Righteousness can be ours before God through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, to all who will believe in Him!

1. The Need – We all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (requirements). (verse 23)

Verses 10-12 > Psalm 14:1-3; 53:1-3

2. The Cure – God presented Him as a sacrifice of atonement for our sin to fulfill His justice. (verse 25)

Atonement = a sacrifice that appeases God’s wrath; covers or turns away His wrath from us. (the life is in the blood Lev. 17:11)

It is also our redemption… (verse 24)

Psalm 49:7-8

3. Grace – We are all justified freely through this grace of Jesus Christ – through faith in His blood. (verses 24-25)

Grace (‘charis’) = the unearned, undeserved favor, mercy and love of God towards us.

A message from the series “Romans.” Are We Honoring God’s Name?

Message: “Unrighteous Judgment” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Romans.” Unrighteous Judgment
Romans 2:1-11

Main Point:
We must not make unrighteous judgments by failing in the same ways, rather, let us live and judge rightly like God with kindness, tolerance, and patience.

Judge (krino) = ‘to distinguish between right and wrong (and in this context – ‘with the implication to condemn’).’

Condemn – v.1 (katakrino) = ‘to sentence; judge worthy of punishment.’

1. We often judge others in the very same areas we fail in,
thus condemning ourselves! (verses 1,3)

Matthew 7:1-5

2. Only God can judge rightly as He is righteous and His judgment is based on truth.
(verse 2)

1Samuel 16:7

Jeremiah 17:10

3. Let us live righteously, and judge rightly with kindness, tolerance, and patience towards others, like God does with us!
(verses 4-6)

Kindness, tolerance and patience toward others’ failures – not towards sin!

James 2:12-13

Message: “Are You Making Excuses?” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Romans.” Are You Making Excuses?!
Romans 1:18-2:6

Main Point:
We cannot make excuses of ignorance nor of our wickedness before God, for He will judge us – rather, through repentance and faith in Christ, we must seek to do good, and be righteous.

1. God has made His invisible attributes plain to us – His eternal power and divine nature are clearly seen and understood in the visible creation, so that all are without excuse for unbelief. verses 18-20

Psalm 19:1-4

*Rejecting and suppressing the knowledge of God through wickedness leads to God’s Wrath wherein He turns us over to a darkened, depraved mind, and futile thinking that leads to idolatry and perverse sensuality verses 21-28

‘Wrath’ (orga) = anger, indignation, and retribution of evil – it is an attribute of God that fulfills His justice

‘Gave them over’ = to give one up into the hands of another> God gives us over to the control of the sin we are embracing (in rebellion to Him).

*His Wrath is being revealed in that He turns us over to our sin and it dominates/contols us, and the result is a depraved mind.

2. Only God is able to rightly judge another, for we fail and are guilty – and therefore we must not judge (condemn) others. verses 2:1-4

Matthew 7:1-5

3. God’s kindness is to lead us to repentance where we escape His Wrath & are made right with Him thru faith in Jesus Christ, and are empowered to live a righteous life. verses 2:4-7

*There is also a Day of God’s Wrath coming – it will be judgment and spiritual death. Nahum 1:2-3 > II Thessalonians 1:7-8

Have you come to true repentance and put your faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ?!!

Philippians 2:12

A message from the series “Romans.” I Am Not Ashamed of the Gospel
Romans 1:1-17

Main Point:
Through the Gospel of Jesus Christ God has given us the power of salvation and righteousness through faith.

Paul’s Calling – called by God to be an apostle of this Gospel.
verses 1&5

Paul was ‘called’ (kaleo) = invited/appointed – used as ‘one invited to a banquet’ – a specific invitation.

‘Apostle’= ambassador, one sent with a commission – to preach
the Gospel.

We are ‘called’ = called to belong to Jesus (verse 6), and called
to the obedience that comes
from faith in Jesus Christ.
(verse 5)

2. Paul’s Purpose – Paul plans to visit them in order to encourage, impart and preach the Gospel to them, and invite them to partner with him in
his desire to preach the
Gospel in Spain.
(verses 9-15 > Chp 15:23-24)

3. Paul’s Preaching – Paul declares he is not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God for salvation, and a righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus Christ, God’s Son.
(verses 3-4; 16-17)
Matthew 24:14;
Mark 16:15-16
‘Power of Salvation’ (sodzo) = ‘saved fully, wholly’ – saved from the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and ultimately the presence
of sin.

‘Righteous’ (dikaios) = being right with, acceptable to God – in relationship and moral character.

Faith’ (pistis) = conviction as true, believing so that I am convinced and rely upon.

his faith.’

Message: “New and Improved?” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Not Part of a Series.” New and Improved?
Hebrews 8:7-13

Main Point:
God has established a new covenant that we may know Him, His forgiveness and have His Laws in our minds and on our hearts.

Covenant = A binding agreement/oath

Hebrews 6:13-14

The emblems of communion symbolize God’s unconditional covenant in Christ with us.

1. God’s people were unfaithful to the Mosaic Covenant, so God turned away from them in judgment. verse 9

Exodus 19:3-6

2. We enter the new covenant of God through faith in Christ’s sacrifice¬and receive the indwelling Spirit, who puts God’s laws in our mind and writes them on our hearts. verse 10

Luke 22:17-20

Communion reminds us of our faith in Jesus Christ and our commitment to live out obedience.

Message: “What Keeps Me From Being Baptized?” from Tom Leonard

A message from the series “Not Part of a Series.” What Keeps Me From Being Baptized?
Acts 8:26-38

Main Point
All that is required for us to be baptized is to personally put our faith in Jesus Christ as the crucified, but risen Son of God, as revealed in the Scripture.

Baptism does not save you. Titus 3:4-6

It is not a means of grace. (infants)

1. The Call: ‘…Beginning at this scripture, he preached Jesus to Him.’ > verse 32-33 (v 35)

‘Believe’ = to understand, accept & trust completely

2. The Conclusion: Why should I not be baptized? (v 36)

Verse 37 – (Not is the oldest manuscripts, but probably an insertion in later ones) > a summation of other verses

Acts 2:38 Repent and be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ…
